Course overview
This course is designed for NHS staff who appraise others. The outline below covers staff who come under Agenda for Change and work within the Knowledge and Skills Framework. The course can be adapted to suit other appraisal systems such as those used within GP's Surgeries.

Anyone who carries out appraisals
Maximum 14 participants

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course delegates will:
• Understand their role in the appraisal process
• Be familiar with the Knowledge and Skills Framework and how this is incorporated into the appraisal system
• Be able to use the paperwork involved in their own appraisal system
• Be aware of how individual objectives relate to the Business Plan
• Know how to write objectives which are motivating and developmental
• Be able to measure success against objectives
• Be able to assess performance against KSF standards using a wide variety of evidence
• Know how to give constructive feedback in both positive and negative circumstances
• Have started to develop the skills needed to get the best outcome from appraisal/performance management meetings
• Know how to devise personal development plans

Training style
The course will be participative and informal, with a mix of discussion, short presentations, exercises and role-play. Practical and relevant examples will be used to help apply knowledge and understanding to real-life scenarios. A healthy balance of trainer input and a variety of practical activities ensure adult learning principles are met.
