Introduction to Managing People for NHS Managers

Course overview
This course is aimed at both new and existing managers who want to develop their skills. The programme focuses on how to put learning into practice and will provide participants with a range of strategies and techniques which can be used on a day-to-day basis.

Who should attend
This course is designed for new and existing managers. Participants will be asked to complete a learning contract with their line manager prior to attending the course. We recommend maximum 12 delegates.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will:
• Have a clear understanding of your role as a manager and be able to list your key management responsibilities
• Be aware of the legislation and Trust policies and procedures you are required to adhere to.
• Know how to plan and delegate tasks appropriately
• Recognise the way in which teams develop and devise an action plan to enhance the performance of your own team
• Understand a range of motivational theories and how you could apply these at work.
• Be aware of the principles of effective communication and how you might use these in a variety of situations
• Be familiar with strategies to help you when managing people problems and difficult situations.
• Be able to agree motivating and SMART objectives which will help your team to achieve their potential, as well as goals set out in the Trusts Business Plan
• Have reviewed your methods of personal organisation and be aware of some simple techniques to help you manage your time.
• Devise a personal action plan to develop your management skills over the next 12 months.

Training style
The workshop will be highly interactive, encouraging participation and making use of exercises, discussions and group work. There will be the opportunity for skills practice and review in each section. Practical and relevant examples will be used as a springboard to help apply knowledge and understanding to real-life scenarios. A healthy balance of trainer input and a variety of practical activities ensure adult learning principles are met.

Course materials
Handouts and worksheets are provided to each participant to support topics covered on the workshop. Certificates of attendance will be presented to each participant after training has been completed.
