BBC - Upfront Induction Scheme

When the BBC launched their innovative 'Upfront' induction scheme they asked Alpha Trainer, Kay Grant to design and manage the on-line session.

Upfront covers a whole range of skills and knowledge reflecting the history, values and challenges facing the BBC. New staff try their hand at TV, radio and online production. On what's known as the 'tri-media' day, delegates create a TV program, a radio program and a website - each of which must be completed in 2 hours.

Kay Grant comments: "Upfront is the most demanding course I have come across in 20 years of training. Trainers must bring the session in on time - every time. Week in, week out Alpha trainers provide training of the highest calibre ensuring that delegates gain an understanding of how web technology is used at the BBC".

The enjoyable and popular online element of the programme introduces delegates to the 'do's' and don'ts' of web design. They use digital cameras to create web friendly images using Photoshop. Using these images, along with their own editorial content, participants finally create their own website in FrontPage. These are published on the BBC intranet, which not only gives the exercise a practical edge but introduces new staff to the rest of the BBC.

From the start BBC New Media Training were looking for trainers with more than just technical expertise. They needed experience of training BBC staff, good people skills and flexibility. Jonathan Halls of the BBC says "Alpha Training has worked in partnership with us for many years. They play an important role in 'Upfront', giving an overview of web production to new employees. Alpha offers a service which is not just professional and delivers good results; but one that is dependable.
