Alpha has been working with the National Film and Television
School (NFTS) to successfully introduce their new approach to diversity.
The NFTS, based in Beaconsfield, is the leading international centre for
professional training in the film, television and related media industries;
its mission being "to educate the best creative talent to the highest
possible standard for tomorrow's screen industries".

Val, formerly Training Manager at the Natural History Museum in South
Kensington, has over 16 years' experience of working with organisations
as both an internal and external consultant.
Val worked closely with Angela Jones (Head of Personnel) and Paivi Overend
(Personnel Officer) to devise and run a series of innovative workshops
specifically designed for NFTS staff. The workshops aimed to help delegates:
• Identify ways of projecting a welcoming
image externally and contribute to the process of creating a more diverse
NFTS
• Demonstrate a greater awareness and understanding of diversity
• Understand the main issues of diversity best practice and discrimination
law.
Workshops encouraged maximum participation and used exercises based
on some well-established TV programme concepts to reflect the issues important
to the NFTS. This approach was appreciated by delegates who found "creating
space to tease out problems and debate them very valuable" as well
as "the exercises - they made you think deeply". One delegate
commented: "an excellent start on a difficult and complex subject".
Paivi Overend found the workshops "thought provoking and professional".
She goes on to say "Alpha delivers high quality training and provides
