Alpha trainers spent this autumn working on an Office XP Upgrade project for United House in Swanley.

Diane Lonergan, IT Manager at United House, asked Alpha to design training sessions to help staff get to grips with new features as well as highlighting changes to existing features. Anne Harkness of Alpha Training says: "As with any upgrade of this type the aim was to provide focussed training which would enable people to carry out their day to day tasks as quickly and effectively as possible".

United House is recognised as the foremost specialist social housing contractor operating in London and the South East, employing over 100 people. Training had to be relevant for all parts of the organisation, including Human Resources, Finance, Building Services, Buying and Warehousing.

Training sessions were 3 hours long and covered: What's new in Windows XP, Office XP, Word 2002, Excel 2002, PowerPoint2002 and Outlook 2002. The sessions were supported by printed handouts on each product, as well as online documentation. Anne Harkness comments: "When designing the sessions and support materials we were very aware of the need to use "bite-size" chunks of information. We worked hard to ensure we covered all essential features and presented them in an interesting way".

Alpha Trainer, Sandra Fitzgerald says: "The XP office upgrade sessions proved a fast and efficient method of preparing the users for the 'newer features'. It enabled them to see how the products could be used in true XP fashion. The combination of hands on and demo style worked well. It allowed individuals to put emphasis on the products/topics they use most."

The sessions, which took place at two locations, were very successful, with an average satisfaction score of 90%. Diane Lonegran says: "The training was very well received and helped to ensure that the rollout was a success". Participants felt the training was "enjoyable and worthwhile", "helpful and well explained" and "excellent, clear training".
